The beauty of science. ANSTO uses different parts of the atom to gain insights into the structure of materials and processes.
Neutrons stream out of the OPAL reactor into neutron scattering instruments at ANSTO’s Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering in Sydney. When they interact with the atoms in a sample object, they scatter and create a beautiful pattern such as the one on this sarong which reveals how the atoms are arranged.
This gives researchers a deep understanding of the material being studied, right down to the atomic level, which is useful for applications in modern science and technology.
